Menorahs
Menorah:
The Menorah is a seven branched candelabrum which was used in both of the Jewish
Temples, its shape was revealed to Moses by God. The Temple Menorah was built out
of a single piece of pure gold, rather than constructing it from multiple parts. Fueled
by olive oil, the Menorah is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish people and is said to
represent the burning bush which Moses had seen on Mount Horeb.
Channukiah:
As opposed to the Menorah, the Channukiah is a nine branched candelabrum which is
used during the holiday of Hanukah by Jewish people across the globe. The holiday of
Hanukah celebrates the successful revolt by the Jewish people against the Greeks during
the second century BC. During the rededication of the Jewish temple, only enough ritually
pure oil for one day was found, miraculously it lasted for a full eight days until more oil
could be acquired. For this reason the candelabrum was given eight braches, with a ninth used
solely for lighting the others.
