Mezuzahs

The Mezuzah is a reminder of God’s presence and omnipotence for the Jewish people, and it is commanded by God to be affixed to every doorpost in one’s home as a constant visual reminder.  The Mezuzah is a small case, often made from wood, clay or metal, and within it is placed a parchment containing the two passages from Deuteronomy which God had commanded to be affixed to the doorposts of believers.   According to tradition it should be placed on the right side of the door at approximately shoulder height.

Before affixing the mezuzah to the doorpost, the following blessing should be recited:

"Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam asher kidishanu b'mitz'votav v'tzivanu lik'bo'a m'zuzah"

"Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to affix a mezuzah"
